Tobacco exports up 9% in nine months

Exports of tobacco leaf (unmanufactured) and tobacco products touched 1,20,850 tonne in terms of quantity and Rs 1,006.48 crore ($229.06 million) in value terms during the nine months (April-December) of 2005-06.
 
J Suresh Babu, executive director, Tobacco Board, said exports rose 9 per cent (quantity terms) and 8 per cent (value-wise in rupees) respectively.
 
He expressed confidence that exports of tobacco leaf would touch the targeted 1,40,000 tonne (Rs 980 crore) and products at 18,000 tonne (Rs 300 crore) by this March end.
 
Tobacco leaf exports reached 1,02,944 tonne, fetching a revenue of Rs 721.85 crore ($164.28 million). The figures for tobacco products (cigarettes, beedis and hookah, chewing, cut and snuff tobaccos) touched 17,906 tonne and Rs 284.63 crore ($64.78 million).
 
The corresponding figures for the same period (April-June) in 2004-05 were 93,008 tonne and Rs 645 crore ($144.83 million) for tobacco leaf and 18,061 tonne and Rs 285.42 crore ($64.02 million) for tobacco products.
 
Export of flue cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco, prince among tobaccos, touched weight-wise 77,273 tonne and rupee-wise Rs 586.03 crore ($133.37 million) at the end of third quarter.
 
The figures for FCV tobacco rose by 10 per cent quantity-wise and by 10 per cent value-wise (rupees). The corresponding figures for FCV tobacco at the end of third quarter in 2004-05 were 69,977 tonne and Rs. 533.40 crore ($119.5 million).
 
Western Europe, he said, despite strong anti-smoking agitations, came out as the best importer, buying 32,164 tonne tobacco leaf, valued at Rs 252.36 crore (27,959 tonne, Rs 227.86 crore in 2004-05).
 
Belgium and UK, which imported tobacco worth Rs 104.37 crore and Rs 49.39 crore respectively, were the first two customers in western Europe. East European countries lifted 28,429 tonne of tobacco, at Rs 180.52 crore (29,204 tonne, Rs 178.04 crore in 2004-05).
 
The number one and two customers were Russia (Rs 125.01 crore) and Ukraine (Rs 25.10 crore).
 
Suresh Babu said south Asia and south east Asia imported tobacco leaf, weighing 24,119 tonne and worth Rs 171.37 crore (12,515 tonne and Rs 89.4 crore in 2004-05).
 
Vietnam with imports worth Rs 55.59 crore and Singapore with Rs 34.85 crore were first and second among them. African countries purchased 8,149 tonne tobacco, paying Rs 60.66 crore to tobacco exporters (12,584 tonne and Rs 99.59 crore).
 
According to him, 5,900 tonne of tobacco (Rs 34.21 crore) has been shipped to west Asian countries (7,183 tonne and Rs 26.20 crore in 2004-05).
 
Countries of North and South Americas imported 3,443 tonne, valued at Rs 14.66 crore (3,205 tonne and Rs 20.09 crore in 2005-05). Australasia nations imported 740 tonne of tobacco leaf valued at Rs 8.07 crore (438 tonne and Rs 4.33 crore).
