Toshiba India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japanese electronics major Toshiba Corporation, would invest around Rs 450 crore in India on brand building. Besides, it is looking to start contract manufacturing of LCD television, refrigerators and washing machines. Going forward, the company will set up a manufacturing facility.
Speaking to Business Standard after distributing LCDs to physically challenged children in the city, Pranab Mohanty, business head (consumer electronics), Toshiba India, said the company was planning to increase its market share to three per cent from one per cent in the TV segment by selling 300,000 units for fiscal 2011 and to 10 per cent in fiscal 2012 by selling to 1.2 million units.
Mohanty said the company was looking to start contract manufacturing for LCD television in India soon and is in talks with players who would assemble televisions, refrigerators and washing machines locally. To a question, he said, “Our ultimate goal is to set up a manufacturing facility, which we are internally discussing. It would take 2-3 years”.
“Sales improved across the television segment during the World Cup. Our aggressive marketing also helped to increase market share," he added.
