Toshiba JSW's Ennore plant to start operations by Jan 2011

Toshiba JSW plans to start the Phase-I operations of its super-critical power equipment manufacturing plant at Ennore near Chennai by January 2011. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government in this regard on Tuesday.

Toshiba JSW will manufacture and market mid to large-sized steam turbines and generators – ranging in size from 500 Mw to 1,000 Mw –for super-critical thermal power plants.

The company plans to invest around Rs 800 crore in the facility over the next 5 years, with around 80 per cent of the amount going into Phase-I. The plant will also recruit about 500 employees by 2014.

The MoU allows Toshiba to take long-term lease of land of about 400,000 square feet. Infrastructure support in the form of better roads from the Ennore Port to the plant, water and electricity will be provided by the state government, according to Atsuhiko Izumi, vice-president ( power systems), Toshiba Corporation.

Toshiba JSW expects sales of $400 million by the financial year 2015, Izumi added.

According to the Eleventh and Twelfth Five-Year National Electricity Plans of the Centre, Indian power generation equipment market is expected to witness a demand of about 16,000 Mw a year for the next decade.
