Traders today shut down shops and businesses in Kanpur to protest the recent spurt in murders and robberies.
There was an argument over downing of shutters between activists of BJP-led Uttar Pradesh Udyog Vyapar Mandal (UPUVM) that called the shutdown and a Samajwadi Party-backed traders' body opposing it but the overall situation was peaceful, officials said.
Shops at Naveen Market, Som Dutt Plaza, Mall Road, Swarup Nagar, Arya Nagar, Kalyanpur and other markets downed shutters while UPUVM claimed today's shutdown would affect trade worth around Rs 50 crore.
There have been a spate of murders and robberies over the past week and UPUVM gave the shutdown call against the rising crime graph and police action on protesting traders a few days ago.
