The Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training, an autonomous research body, has said the hike in truck rentals on trunk routes has been much more than the rise in diesel prices.
A study done by the body (IFTRT) has said that while truck rentals moved up by 8-10 per cent on trunk routes, diesel price was increased by 6 per cent last week. Even though the railways had decided not to increase freight rates, truckers had done so, the IFTRT added.
The IFTRT has termed the transporters strike, protesting the fuel price hike on Tuesday, a non-starter. According to a quick study, the Agriculture Produce Marketing Centres (APMC) in Vashi (Navi Mumbai), New Sabzi Mandi, Azadpur (Delhi), the poultry and fish market in Ghazipur (Delhi) and the wholesale fish market in Howrah (Kolkata) received regular flow of trucks, indicating business as usual.
