Two-wheeler firms continue good show
BS Reporter / New Delhi/Chennai Feb 02, 2010, 00:39 IST

Two-wheeler manufacturers continued their buoyant sales in January. Hero Honda reported a 23.57 per cent jump in its sales at 389,802 units last month, compared with the same month’s sales last year.

The country’s largest two-wheeler maker is also planning to launch three new products by the end of this financial year. In a statement, Hero Honda said it had sold 315,458 units in January last year. The figure registered during January this year is the highest-ever sales in the month by the company, it added. In addition, for the 13th consecutive time, the company recorded more than 300,000 despatches in a single month.

“The sales growth we have achieved is significant in light of the high base that we created in the same period last year,” Hero Honda Motors Senior Vice-President (Marketing & Sales) Anil Dua said.

TVS Motor Company also reported a 34 per cent jump in two-wheeler sales in January at 125,578 units, against 93,729 units in the same month last year. Domestic sales grew 37 per cent last month to 109,504 units from 79,729 units in the same month a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

Motorcycle sales last month stood at 54,698 units, against 43,990 units in January, 2009 — up 24 per cent. Scooter sales grew 43 per cent to 25,509 units from 17,832 units. The company’s three-wheeler sales were also up at 1,710 units in January, 2010, against 466 units in the same month last year

Suzuki Motorcycle India, another major two-wheeler maker, reported a jump of 93 per cent in its sales in January this year at 20,441 units, over the same month in 2009.

The subsidiary of the Japanese auto giant Suzuki Motor Corporation attributed the robust growth last month to the response to its new motorcycle GS150R and its only scooter, Access 125.
