UniverCell National Speed SMS Championship
Announcement / Corporate Nov 10, 2009, 20:05 IST

UniverCell – The Mobile Expert, conducted it's first round of India’s first National Speed SMS Championship at the Garuda Mall, in Bangalore.

There where 500 registered participants who where invited to the venue, in various batches. Participants had to contest in groups of 5. It was the survival of the fittest and fingers flew. The thumb-war had its mix of tensions and ended with some nail biting finishes. Contestants thumb-warred-it-out against opponents by texting 140 character SMSes that appeared on the screen. Each contestant was asked to message from a mobile phone provided by UniverCell. For the first time in India, contestants felt what it was to be a part of an exciting and entertaining SMS Championship. ‘Sambar is a vegetable stew or chowder based on a broth made with tamarind and toovar dal’ was one of the texts that was displayed for the contestants to let their fingers loose. The contest was a challenge as every batch had a different text to type, which created some tension and anxiety.

‘Texting’ and ‘SMSing’ are two words that are yet to hit the dictionaries, but they signify one of the most commonly used of modes of communication for all mobile users. Texting has changed the way people communicate. It is fast, direct and convenient. Texting while in conversation, texting while driving, and texting instead of making calls are a part of what is being evolved as the emerging mobile body language. Students use it largely, travelers use it for killing time, and corporates use it for saving time, all whilst not realizing that some of the thumb muscles have flexed to be the fastest ‘texter’ around.

“UniverCell is conducting the National Speed SMS Championship to honor those who have mastered the art of rapid text messaging. The National Speed SMS Championship gives our customers the opportunity to put their text messaging skills to  test in the ultimate battle for the title and money” says Mr. Ramesh Barath. VP, UniverCell Mobiles.

The texting championship is ready to provide opportunities to young enthusiasts to compete against the best in the country who have so far not had a platform to compete against each other in this form of competition. In addition to the SMS Championship, there were opportunities for eliminated players to win exciting mobiles, accessories and gift vouchers.

The texting championship showcased the biggest thumb war this city has ever seen. The platform extended the chance to give an experience of what it takes to be the best, along with offering prizes worth Rs. 50,000 and the title of 'UniverCell National Speed SMS Champion', that was honoured.
