UP constitutes vocational education board
Virendra Singh Rawat / New Delhi/ Lucknow Nov 06, 2009, 00:50 IST

To make the state’s youth more employable for the industry, the Uttar Pradesh government has constituted the UP Vocational Education and Training Board (UPVETB).

The body will facilitate education and training to the educated and uneducated youth according to their merit in various trades and encourage self-employment.

The industry has welcomed the move saying it was a step in the right direction.

Business Standard had reported in April 2009 that the government would set up a separate board to ensure quality education in the state Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics.

There is projected requirement of 500 million certified and skilled technicians in India by 2022. There are about 106 and 156 polytechnics and ITIs respectively in UP.

All examinations pertaining to vocational education will be conducted by UPVETB from next academic session 2010-11.

“Although, it is a welcome move, the government will have to ensure that the trainers come out of their shell and update their knowledge base by actively interacting with the industry,” Indian Industries’ Association (IIA) executive director D S Verma told Business Standard.

He maintained that the current ‘skilled’ manpower in the state was not employable and drastic changes needed to be made in training methodologies, curriculum and mechanism of industry linkages. The Board would provide employment-oriented education to the youth, who had dropped out of the school, so that skilled personnel could be churned out as per the requirements of industry.

The age of a candidate getting education in different courses from vocational institutions under the Board can go up to the limit of any age from 14 years.

The study work under different courses of 10 vocational trades at 10+2 level in the Board of Secondary Education under secondary education department will be continued in 892 high schools and intermediate colleges at present.
