The diesel generator industry of Agra produces more than 60,000 diesel gensets every year but a sudden change in the UP government’s stance over environment could well serve to throw this industry out of gear.
The generator makers of Agra are facing an imminent threat of being thrown out of business with the UP government shifting its focus towards the development of non-conventional energy sources, such as power-back solutions in urban areas, gradually phasing out the use of diesel generators towards a cleaner and more environment-friendly solution.
A recent statement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary R Ramani on giving priority to non-conventional energy sources instead of generators in the state has fuelled debate in Agra over the commercial viability of the use of non-conventional energy sources over generators, leaving the diesel generator industry of the town worried.
According to recent media reports, the Non-conventional Energy Development Agency (NEDA) has already authorised a Chennai-based agency to carry out a wind velocity survey in at least five districts of UP, including Mathura and Agra, to set up 1,200-1,500 Mw power houses to provide power to domestic consumers using windmills.
