UP to move swiftly on Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor
Virendra Singh Rawat / New Delhi/ Lucknow Jan 11, 2010, 00:05 IST

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to move swiftly on connecting the major cities falling in the National Capital Region (NCR) with Delhi under the rapid transit system.

As part of the Regional Plan 2021, several cities of UP would be linked with the national capital through Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for speedier movement of commuter and goods. In the first phase, a 68-km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor would be developed at a cost of over Rs 1,040 crore.

In a recent review meeting, state chief secretary Atul Kumar Gupta directed senior officials to take urgent steps for early realisation of the project.

To spruce up the transport system in the NCR, a study on ‘NCR Integrated Multi-modal Transportation Plan’ was commissioned by the NCR Planning Board and conducted by a private organisation.

Under the Plan, eight corridors have been selected to be developed in due course, under which the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor under the UP sub-region has been selected in the first phase.

Meanwhile, the state government will also develop a 170-km expressway flanking the Upper Ganga Canal (UGC) in collaboration with IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (IIDC). The work on the project is proposed to start from April 2010 after the preliminary survey and bidding process is completed.

The proposed eight-lane access controlled expressway, to be developed on the right bank of UGC, will extend from Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Ghaziabad to the Uttarakhand border.

“The commissioning of these two projects would definitely boost the economic development in the region and give a great push to the industrialisation process in UP,” an industry spokesperson told Business Standard. IIDC will soon start the work on the survey and alignment of the expressway, and submit a comprehensive report.
