The Maharashtra Government today issued a resolution naming the newly opened Bandra Worli sea bridge as Rajiv Gandhi Sealink.
Bringing an end to the furore over naming the bridge, the Public Works Department today issued a resolution naming the sealink after the former Prime Minister.
The Rajiv Gandhi bridge will apply to the existing Bandra Worli sealink and the proposed sealinks between Versova to Nariman Point.
Sealinks have been proposed between Versova and Bandra, Bandra to Worli, Worli to Haji Ali and Haji Ali to Nariman Point.
Following the inauguration of the bridge, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had said the bridge would be named after Rajiv Gandhi. Shiv Sena activists had carried out protests across the city demanding that the sealink be named after Veer Savarkar.
On June 30, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was inaugurated by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and proposal to name it as 'Rajiv Gandhi Setu', mooted by Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar was immediately accepted by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
Recalling the late Prime Minister's contribution in India's progress as an Information Technology giant, Pawar had said it was Rajiv who infused scientific temper in the new generation.
"He (Rajiv) sowed the seeds of a telecom and IT revolution and in the last two decades, India and Indians have earned a place of pride in the global IT sector," Pawar had said.
