Positive comments by brokers about Microsoft boosted tech shares, helping the Nasdaq gain 20 points (1%) to 1,827. However, falling oil prices and a slip in energy shares dragged the Dow 16 points to 8,540.

Indian ADRs were mostly up.

Genpact surged 3.5% to $11.89. ICICI Bank and Patni Computers rallied 3% each to $29.83 and $10.42, respectively.

However, MTNL plunged 13.5% to $3.6. Wipro slipped 1% to $11.35.
