Stating that Washington would welcome meaningful steps that lead to a reduction of tension on the Korean Peninsula, the United States has said it supports dialogue between North and South Korea.
Such a statement from a State Department spokesperson came in the wake of reports of a North Korean delegation meeting South Korean president yesterday. It is being reported that North Korea is suggest to have a summit between Kim Jong-il and the South Korean President.
"As a general principle, as you have heard many times, we support a dialogue between North Korea and South Korea, and we welcome meaningful steps that lead to a reduction of tension on the Korean Peninsula," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters at his daily press conference.
"About any kind of proposed summit, though, I mean, I don't have any details of the discussions that they had that I can share with you," he said in response to a question.
Kelly said there was no contact between the North Korean delegation and the American delegation bed by the former Secretary of State Madeline Albright.
"No members of the United States delegation to the funeral of Kim Dae-jung met with the North Koreans," he said.
Responding to a question, he said: "I would not say that we have seen really any progress toward our oft-stated goal and our clear position that we want to engage with North Korea to discuss this denuclearisation issue in the Six-Party context. We are very firm on that. We are willing to talk with them bilaterally, but only in this multilateral context."
On the resumption of six party talks by the North Korea, Kelly said: "The Six-Party talks are arranged so the real regional stakeholders around North Korea, the countries that have a real stake in the denuclearisation of North Korea, are our partners in the Six-Party Talks, and we want to make sure that they're enfranchised in these talks. That's why the denuclearisation talks have to take place in that Six-Party context."
