US urged to protect human rights
Our Bureau / Kolkata November 05, 2004
In today’s world, United States of America (USA) should act as a major player against all human rights violations that are taking all over the world, urged Thatagata Roy, president, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), West Bengal, at an panel discussion ‘The US Presidency: Prospects For a New World Order’ organised by the American center, Calcutta - prior to the announcement of the final result of the US presidential election.

Citing the active participation of Indian American, who have contributed around $ 16 million for this year’s election, Robert Blake, deputy chief of mission — US embassy, New Delhi assured expansion in trade and strategic partnership between India and the US under the new span of presidency, as the potential in this country is very high.

He also urged more Indian students to go to the US for higher studies.

Along with China, India constituted the majority of the foreign students studying in US universities.

On the Iraq issue Robert claimed that in almost all occasions, US has shown a multilateral approach and even today they were working closely with all they allies to solve global problem of terrorism, mass destruction weapon, restoration of peace in disturbed economies. Issues pertaining to terrorism, preemption, possible changes in US action regarding controversial matters dominated the discussion.

Showing his discontent at the US ‘tilt’ towards Pakistan in sensitive issues like terrorism Roy said, “though all efforts of the US in fighting terrorism and getting hold of terrorist like Osama Bin Laden is highly appreciated, but it should change its attitude in case of Pakistan. It should not take whatever Pakistan says on face value”.

He said he hoped the next four years tenure under the president would witness a lot more open attitude in terms of trade and exchange.

“Under the new system with quota regime being removed, we sincerely hope to see more job been outsourced and non-tariff barriers been progressively removed”, he added.

A sincere and conscious US effort to move from unilateral attitude to multilateralism was ardently desired by all the panelists.

“In present globalisation era, even if a oil line has to be laid from Iran to India through Pakistan we need active intervention of US as they are the global leaders and lot of responsibilities lies with them”, said A Chakraborty, another panelist of the day’s discussion while explaining the country’s importance in global arena.
