VCTPL targets 25,000 TEUs this fiscal
Our Correspondent / Visakhapatnam November 24, 2003
Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL) is targeting to handle 25,000 TEUs (twentyfoot equivalent units) during this fiscal through the Vizag port.

It is jointly promoted by United Liner Agencies and Dubai Ports Authority, holding 74 per cent equity and 26 per cent equity respectively.

VCTPL invested Rs 100 crores in Vizag port to create container handling facility on container berth at the outer harbour.

“With current handling facilities we can able to handle one lakh container at Vizag port per annum, we have started our operations from June ending, so by March end we can handle not less than 25,000 containers, already we have handled more than 12,000 containers and we can touch one lakh containers mark in the year 2005-2006,” D Sugantharaj, the chief operating officer, VCTPL, told Business Standard.

“In the East Coast our terminal is the modern and youngest container terminal, presently our productivity per gantry crane is higher than Chennai, Paradeep and Kolkata container terminals,” he said.

“Cost of handling is also cheep in our terminal compared to other terminals, and with 5-6 hours VCT is able to completing the loading and unloading of containers, because of these strengths, we can attract more container cargo to Vizag Port,” he added.

VCTPL berth is having 15 meters depths, so this berth can allow even main liner container vessels also.

Presently only feeder vessels have been coming to pickup the container cargo, due to growth in container cargo, with in one and a half to two years, main liners will touch Vizag Port, he observed.

“To attract more containers we have deputed market personals in different places to divert container cargo to Vizag Port, and at the same time we are organizing seminars and meetings to advocate the more usage of container for movement of different cargos,” Sugantharaj revealed.
