Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores has recalled about 1.5 million Durabrand DVD players sold in the US, due to the product posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission in co-operation with Wal-Mart on Thursday announced the voluntary recall of nearly 1.5 million Durabrand DVD players.

In a statement, the regulator said the players can "overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers".

"Wal-Mart has received 12 reports of DVD players overheating, five of which have resulted in fires that caused property damage," it noted.

The product manufactured in China, was sold from January 2006 through July 2009 at Wal-Mart across the US. The DVD players are priced at about $29.
