Wi-Fi may badly affect
Himansh Dhomse / Ahmedabad December 20, 2005
Rampant usage of Industry Science and Medicine (ISM) band between 2.417 and 2.457 Ghz is likely to affect Wi-Fi technology adversly in Ahmedabad.

When everyone is talking about bringing Wi-Fi in Ahmedabad, the technology runs on radio frequency on ISM which Department of Telecom has allowed to use for free of cost for research purpose.

But several companies in Gujarat are reportedly misusing ISM band free of cost commercially. Not less than 800 wireless networks are believed to be using it in Ahmedabad which is causing high congestion in the wireless network.

A Wireless Planning Coordination (WPC) official told Business Standard that it is difficult to find the authorised wireless networks and to trace unauthorised or unlicensed wireless networks is far away.

If Wi-Fi brought in indoor hotspots, there will not be any big congestion problems. But many ISPs and Telecom companies are investing and creating hotspots in public places where the ISM band is already full and congested, informed Mandeep Singh, Technical Head of Icenet.

"During peak hours, at CG Road, many wireless network users use amplifier for more power which is illegal according WPC. And if congestion continues in the network, the Wi-Fi users at public places will face low speed connectivity and will curse ISPs for providing low speed connectivity," said Singh.

Outdoor networks in Ahmedabad, Baroda and other parts of city are so congested as all networks are interfering in each others network. Ruzan Khambata, CEO of E-Comm claimed that there are many players in the market who are using wireless network for free.

"Last month when E-Comm provide a wireless connection in Ghuma, we faced a huge problem of collusion in the network during day time," she said.

As this can not be stopped, surely there will be a big problem in future for Wi-Fi connections, she claimed. "The ultimate options left is to purchase a license for 5.7 Ghz which is very costly," she added.

But on the other side, many wireless network user are consuming above ISM band frequency without authorisation. Many are using unlicensed wireless network in other parts of the state and WPC in Delhi is not aware of it, claimed technical head of a telecom company who is going to install hotspots in public places in Ahmedabad.

According to him, WPC officials do not have the latest technology to trace unlicensed wireless networks creating traffic for other authorized wireless networks.
