XLRI courses on stemming attrition
Pradipta Mukherjee / Kolkata January 02, 2008
A strategic management programme for SMEs is being offered.

XLRI Jamshedpur has drawn up a number of courses this January for middle and senior -level Human Resources (HR) managers to help them design effective employee retention strategies.

The institute will also offer strategic management courses for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It will also introduce courses on stock-based compensation for employees.

A third course will be introduced on grievance and dissatisfaction management in order to help HR managers retain employees. The course fee would range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000.

According to XLRI instructors, despite differences, all SME firms share a common set of problems that demand a very different style of professional orientation.

The managerial problems that small and medium enterprises face include the fact that the technology-related needs of small and medium enterprises businesses are different from large businesses in terms of resources and capabilities. The courses will also help improve strategic decision-making skills of HR managers.

Moreover, current and emerging managerial problems of small and medium enreprise firms such as strategy formulation, organising, leading the fragmented workforce, international market entry to sustain competitiveness, and legal implications will be the focus for facilitating the development of such skills.

These courses will also offer courses for HR managers on stock-based compensation for employees and designed to help managers come up with compensation packages which include equity components.

The program will introduce the participants to stocks, stock options and teach them the advantages and the caveats in using equity as compensation for employee salaries.

XLRI’s course on grievance or dissatisfaction management is for middle and senior -level HR managers.

The courses are expected to help HR professionals develop skills for effective grievance resolution in order to improve employee morale, work performance and the general attitute of the employees towards the organisation.

According to XLRI, grievances may be related to the non-fulfillment of a contract like a non payment of overtime, a non-negotiated workload, denial of leave, or withholding of a promotion.

Employee dissatisfaction could also be with the existing working conditions, remuneration, hours of work, facilities, or it may be the expression of a protest against what an employee feels is an act of injustice.
