The growing clout of multiplexes forced Chopra to sign on a revenue sharing agreement of 48 per cent and 38 per cent (in Mumbai) and 50 per cent and 40 per cent in other territories for the next two weeks, for not just Tashan but for three other upcoming films — animation flick Roadside Romeo, Bachna Ae Haseeno with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic featuring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee.
However, Aditya Chopra directed Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi starring Shah Rukh Khan has been signed on for 50 per cent in week one and 42 per cent in week two.
"An understanding has been reached between YRF and the multiplexes for the entire YRF slate of films for the year 2008. The terms agreed upon are to the mutual satisfaction of all concerned parties," said an official statement issued by YRF.
All leading multiplex executives confirmed screening Tashan starting Saturday.
Theatre chains — PVR Cinemas, Adlabs Cinemas, Shringar Cinemas, Cinemax India, Inox Leisure — has opposed Chopra's demand for 50 per cent and 45 per cent of the tickets sales in the first and second week, respectively.
Consequently, the multi-starrer was not screened in multiplexes on April 25 and was showcased in only single screens. As a result, Tashan lost out around Rs 15-20 crore in its opening week. The film's budget is in the range of Rs 35-40 crore.
Last year, Chopra earned a return of just 10 per cent from his five films. Of the five releases, only Chak De! India and Ta Ra Rum Pum were successful, while Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Aaja Nachle failed at the box office.
The production house had signed the five films in a bulk deal with multiplexes for a revenue share of 50 per cent and 45 per cent in the first two weeks. But which Jhoom Barabar Jhoom flopped, YRF gave a 5 per cent rebate to theatre chains. |
