| Chinese telecom major ZTE Telecom has shortlisted 7-8 locations, including one in West Bengal for its proposed maunfacturing base in India.

| "The company will invest $30-40 million for its manufacturing base, which will also act as a sourcing hub for the markets in South-East Asia. The manufacturing facility which will spread over an area of 30-50 acres, will have a production capacity of 40-50 million handsets per annum", DK Ghosh, chairman and managing director of ZTE Telecom India Limited said.

| The manufacturing base will be an SEZ(special economic zone) with a full-fledged factory and a dedicated R&D facility as well.

| ZTE which has already done the feasibility study is hopeful of finalising the location in December this year, with the construction set to begin next year.

| The manufacturing facility expects to resume commercial production in 2009, Ghosh told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on ICT(Information and Communication Technology) East 2007, organised by CII.

| ZTE intends to export handsets from India to other South-East Asian countries like Nokia, Motorola and LG.

| Currently, ZTE Telecom has a manufacturing facility in Manesar(Haryana) on an area of 3 acres with a production capacity of 1 million handsets per annum.

| In another development, ZTE Telecom India Limited has also announced its plans to launch its branded handsets in the esatern markets in the next two to three months.

| "We will set up distribution channels in the eastern India in 2-3 months for sale of our branded handsets", Ghosh added.

| Hitherto, ZTE's branded handsets are only marketed in the western markets of India, especially Maharashtra.

| ZTE Telecom had also entered into an agreement with Vodafone for selling 20 million handsets.

| ZTE Telecom, which has about 15 factories worldwide, raked in revenues of $5 billion last year.

| Talking on the ICT sector in India, Ghosh said that the sector is poised to attract an FDI of $20 billlion in the next three years and would contribute Rs 20,000 crore to the national exchequer in 2007-08.

| He also pointed out that the private telecom operators in the country are trying to outsource their operational expenditure. |
