Tobacco growers of Mysore district today blamed the Tobacco Board for fall in prices of the globally much-sought after India’s flue cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco cultivated in Karnataka.
India’s tobacco production rose by 25 per cent to 314 million kg in 2008-09, making it even more difficult for the country to meet its commitment to the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce production by 50 per cent within the next decade.
Tobacco farmers in Andhra Pradesh are seeking higher prices though their realisation now is still better than last year. Indications are that the prices may have peaked.

Exports of tobacco leaf (unmanufactured) and tobacco products touched 1,20,850 tonne in terms of quantity and Rs 1,006.48 crore ($229.06 million) in value terms during the nine months (April-December)
