| Call it the Bollywood effect. At his press conference in Mumbai during the election campaign, Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid repeatedly gave film references. When someone alleged the Congress party had given very few seats to Muslim candidates and could be accused of neglecting the community, Khurshid recited lines from the famous Anand Bakshi song from the movie Amar Prem, “Kuchh to log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna” (people will say something, that’s their job). After a few minutes, a chit was passed on to him saying that Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan had arrived for the next press conference. Khurshid wrapped up his press meet while saying, “This was just the matinee show. Now the evening show will start. |

| Pratip Kar: Vulgarity in executive compensation ? a point of view | 12-OCT-09 |
|
| The meaning of a word is intrinsically connected to its definition. It is determined fully by how we choose to define it. Since we have chosen to define the day as the period of time which elapses between sunrise and sunset, we call that time the day; we could have reversed the definition and called it night. We have elected to call a colour green, so it is called green, we could name it red as well. Take the word vulgar for example. What is vulgar would depend very much on how we opt to define it. Would we in India call the Khajuraho sculptures, or those which adorn the walls of some of our temples, vulgar? Well we may hesitate to do so and try and find a convincing spiritual rationale for it. But someone else from another land may not agree, since his definition of vulgarity is different. |

| Sunil Jain: Forget Ambani, think Goenka | 08-OCT-09 |
|
| Most are focused on the salaries of the Ambani brothers when it comes to the ‘’vulgar’’ salaries Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid spoke of. The Ambanis, it turns out, take home very reasonable fractions of their companies’ sales/net profits — 0.03/0.23 per cent in the case of Mukesh and 0.22/0.63 per cent in the case of Anil. The Marans of Sun TV, Kalanithi and wife Kavery, in comparison, took home 7.36/16.96 per cent of sales/net profits (see graphic). |
