| Thinking out of the cage | 21-NOV-09 |
| Admittedly, Nehru was there at the start of things, the end of an age, the awakening of a nation, that tryst with destiny. So he and others of his generation were better placed than we are to think laterally, to explore all of history for models towards which to incline the path of our future. He also spent years in prison, an enforced separation from the bustle and fire of the freedom movement which enabled him to look beyond the constrained present to the past and future, all in the service of his country. In other words, he used his time in prison to think big for India. |

| North continues to excel in national growth | 07-NOV-09 |
| The northern region of the country continues to be the largest contributor to the national GDP at 27.5 per cent, in 2007-08. However, the economic growth in the region is below the national average. During 1999-2000 to 2007-08, the region clocked a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2 per cent, against the 6.5 per cent national average, according to the analysis presented in the second edition of CII’s report on Gross State Domestic Product for states in the north India. Elaborating on the region’s performance at the sectoral and sub- sectoral level, Chairman CII northern region Harpal Singh said the underperformance had been witnessed across primary and tertiary sectors. One of the key reasons of underperformance in the primary sector had been slow growth rates witnessed by two of the largest agrarian states in the region – Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, which contributed 57.5 per cent to the region’s primary sector. |

| A V Rajwade: Curbing capital flows | 26-OCT-09 |
| Last week, I had argued that “If there are problems in managing the exchange rate … because of capital inflows, the correct course is to curtail the latter: Too many countries have suffered by allowing the currency to appreciate because of capital inflows, and the current account deficit to become unsustainable (Mexico 1994-95, East Asia 1997-98, Argentina 2001)”. I had not imagined that another BRIC member would act on the point so soon. |

| IIMs' glo-cal dilemma | 21-OCT-09 |
| Last week's decision by Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal to allow the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to go global is a good idea, provided it does not draw on the manpower and financial resources of IIMs in India. The concept generated heated debate two years ago when Sibal’s predecessor Arjun Singh turned down IIM, Bangalore’s proposal to set up a campus in Singapore at the suggestion of that country's government. Singh’s argument then was that the IIMs should first concentrate on meeting domestic demand. Sibal has since reversed that stand, saying the IIMs would be free to go abroad provided they amended their memoranda of association. Rather than set up foreign campuses, IIMs should look at the franchise option to build their brand globally. |
