| The last Cabinet meeting lasted for just 20 minutes, of which around 15 minutes were taken up by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni. Soni moved a proposal related to widening the digital cable TV network and Dayanidhi Maran, the textiles minister whose family runs the Sun TV network in Tamil Nadu, raised a few technical questions. In an earlier Cabinet meeting, Maran had objected to Soni’s proposal and ensured that the proposal got deferred. This time round, however, Soni had come prepared and gave an elaborate reply to Maran. With no more objections, the Cabinet passed the proposal. |

| Mills seek ban on cotton exports | 11-NOV-09 |
|
| “The actual cotton production would slip to 26 million bales (one bale is 165 kg) this year, as against 29 million bales produced during the last season due to drought and floods in all major cotton-growing states. Of the production during 2009-10 season, only around 16 million bales are expected to be of above average quality. If this cotton is exported as against the domestic requirement of 24 million bales, the Indian textile industry would lose its competitive edge in the global market,” R K Agarwal, member of Sima, and chairman of AP Spinning Mills Association, told reporters here on Tuesday. |

| Like many of his cabinet colleagues, telecom minister A Raja is also quite keen to adhere to the new standards of austerity that have been prescribed by the prime minister, and which are being adhered to by Congress President Sonia Gandhi who flies economy class. So, Raja booked an economy class ticket on an Indian Airlines flight from Chennai. But since business class on the flight had some vacant seats, the airline offered to seat him in business class and he accepted — to be fair to Raja, he never asked to be upgraded. Fellow minister, Dayanidhi Maran, who was on the same flight with his family, however, refused to take up the airline on the offer. |
