Higher collection of direct taxes in NWR18-NOV-09
The North West Region of the Income Tax Department comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Perdesh, Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh has registered 13.7 growth in collection of direct taxes till 16 November, 2009 as compared to the corresponding period last year.

The green shoots visible in the economy failed to enhance government revenue with indirect tax collections — comprising customs, excise and service tax — falling almost 22 per cent to Rs 1,26,903 crore in the April-October period this year. It stood at Rs 1,61,954 crore in the corresponding seven months of 2008-09. The overall decline was led by a 32 per cent fall in customs revenue.

Embarrassing code27-OCT-09
That the new direct taxes code is proving embarrassing for the government is obvious, it’s just that one didn’t realise the government felt the same way as well. At one point the code says, “A business shall be distinct and separate from another business if there is no interlacing, inter-dependence or unity ‘embarrassing’ the two businesses.” Now that’s embarrassing.

The session was attended by over 100 tax technocrats comprising ‘who’s who’ in the tax fraternity, chief of country’s three leading chambers of commerce and was chaired by the Finance Minister.
