| While the CPI(M) is planning to restrict the tenure of the office bearers to a maximum of three terms (nine years), it is also keeping the backdoor open for a handful of leaders. The proposal of restricting the tenures in key posts, adopted at the last Central Committee meeting of the party, says that, in exceptional circumstances, for the interest of the party, an office-bearer can remain in his post even after his nine-year term comes to an end. |

| Achuthanandan, Vijayan slug it out at Politburo meeting | 05-JUL-09 |
|
| Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan and his bete noire, CPI(M) Kerala unit General Secretary Pinarai Vijayan, were at loggerheads at the special Politburo meeting of the party in New Delhi today even as senior leader Prakash Karat called for a way to end the crisis in the party’s state unit. The meeting had been convened mainly to resolve the severe infighting in the unit. The party won just four out of 20 seats in the state in the Lok Sabha polls. |

| Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan called a press conference on the annual Plan allocation made to the state. To ensure that he was well prepared, he had Finance Minister Thomas Issac and State Planning Board Deputy Chief Prabhat Patnaik on either side. But all the questions from the capital’s media were on his bête noire, CPI(M) state secretary Pinarai Vijayan. An exasperated Achuthanandan burst out, “Look at my left side. Thomas Issac is the finance minister; on my right, Prabhat Patnaik is the deputy chief of state planning board. I specially brought them here so that they could talk about the Plan allocations and related issues. But you seem to be interested only in one issue. It’s better to stop this press meet.” This had some impact and a couple of questions were posed to Patnaik. |

| Before the Central Committee meeting of the CPI(M) in Kochi, the state committee handed out a list of instructions for the comrades. The first order said that when General Secretary Prakash Karat spoke at the customary public rally, they all had to clap. Given the fight between Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and State Secretary Pinarai Vijayan, the state leaders wanted to put up a show of unity in front of the central leadership. The second instruction was quite stern — no one should come drunk to the meeting. Last year, during the party meet in Kottayam, drunken comrades created mayhem and this prompted Vijayan to compare the political rally with an “Usha Uthup show”. The state unit was eager not to have a repeat show. |
