| Madhukar Sabnavis: Challenging time for challengers | 06-NOV-09 |
| Pay-per-second billing has become the norm in mobile telephony today. However, this was stimulated by the launch of Tata DoCoMo — the nth entrant in a crowded category. Idea challenged the leaders — Airtel and Vodafone — with a very distinct brand advertising to stand out and get noticed in a cluttered market. DoCoMo used a pricing innovation to enter and make an impact. Though the jury is still out on whether it has worked and on what volume the brand has gathered, there is no doubt the brand has been noticed and the fact that competitors have followed — imitated — it is perhaps recognition that it has done things right. This will be a feature of brands and marketing in future. |

| IIMs' glo-cal dilemma | 21-OCT-09 |
| Last week's decision by Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal to allow the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to go global is a good idea, provided it does not draw on the manpower and financial resources of IIMs in India. The concept generated heated debate two years ago when Sibal’s predecessor Arjun Singh turned down IIM, Bangalore’s proposal to set up a campus in Singapore at the suggestion of that country's government. Singh’s argument then was that the IIMs should first concentrate on meeting domestic demand. Sibal has since reversed that stand, saying the IIMs would be free to go abroad provided they amended their memoranda of association. Rather than set up foreign campuses, IIMs should look at the franchise option to build their brand globally. |

| Letters: When brands fail | 09-OCT-09 |
| Amitabh Bachchan, going by your report (‘The Rs 700-cr brand’, October 5), is a brand worth Rs 700 crore — that’s the kind of contracts he’s got on hand from the 19 brands he endorses. And yet, as you report (‘Big B fails to boost Bigg Boss inaugural ratings’, October 6), the Big Brand failed to take up the TRPs of the new show he’s hosting. It is time companies moved beyond tired old marketing mantras of getting the big names and hoping that this will make up for the magic the brand/product lacks. Marketers should learn from brands like Amul or Vodafone where there are no stars, except for the product itself. Taking a cue from the movie industry, a series of low-budget movies have done well while those with big stars have flopped — eventually it all depends upon the story line. |
