| Letters: Global warming | 18-NOV-09 |
| The bigger battle on global warming appears to be within the country itself (‘Cooperate on climate change, PM tells Saran, Ramesh’, November 17) since the two people in charge of India’s negotiating strategy at Copenhagen are not united on what their line has to be. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has done well to ask them to come up with a common position. While Ramesh feels that India needs to move forward from the Kyoto position, Saran’s view is that Kyoto is what best suits India’s interests. |

| Carbon dioxide (CO2) is infamous as a pollutant. It is one of the key greenhouse gases (GHGs), along with methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases, which cause global warming and consequential climate change that has ominous implications for agriculture. But, what is generally not duly appreciated is that the CO2 also acts as a yield booster. |

The world is all heated up about global warming, but did you know that there has been no warming of the globe over the past decade? And that, according to one recent forecast, there will be no warming over the next decade either? Also, did you know that there was no change in India’s mean temperature for three decades up to the mid-1970s? In other words, in roughly 50 out of 75 years, there was/will be no global warming! No, I am not joining the small minority which still argues that |
