In a huff20-AUG-09
It may be a coincidence, but Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee hasn’t attended any cabinet meeting after she almost threatened to walk out of a cabinet meeting in the third week of July over the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill. On that occasion, Banerjee had to argue with not only Rural Development Minister C P Joshi but also other Congress ministers like Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal who wanted to pass the bill immediately. While she has been in West Bengal for her political programmes, she was in Delhi in the first week of August when a Cabinet meeting took place. On that occasion, she chose to attend a private party of a party colleague instead.
Really a didi14-AUG-09
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee may be known for her mercurial temper, but she is also a caring host even if she is not hosting the event. The Trinamool Congress MP and minister of state in the urban development ministry, Saugata Ray, had a house-warming party, and Banerjee tried to ensure everyone was taken care of. She encouraged actress-turned-MP Shatabdi Roy to eat two more pieces of fish as ‘it will not make you fat’. She asked all party colleagues to taste the soup as ‘it is really nice’ and tried to ensure that Ray didn’t go out to smoke too often. When Ray arranged a cake with ‘Trinamool Congress Zindabad’ written on it and asked Banerjee to cut it, she quipped, ‘How can I cut Trinamool Congress’, before cutting a small corner of the cake.

Mamata pays from pocket02-AUG-09
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee not only pays for the food in her office from her own pocket but also makes advance payments. Last week, at an informal meeting of her party MPs in her room in Parliament, Banerjee asked the canteen staff, “How much money is there in my account?” The railway employee replied, “Madam, a maximum Rs 20 is left.” Banerjee immediately handed over Rs 50. Even as she is particular about paying her bills, she can’t enjoy many items that the railway catering service in Parliament canteen has introduced after she became the minister. When she was served aloo chop, an all-time favourite in West Bengal, Banerjee sent it back, “After the CPI(M) goons tried to kill me and I was operated on my head, I can’t eat spicy food.” While others relished the aloo chop, Banerjee ordered dosas for her deputy, KH Munniyappa.

Before the press conference at his Tughlak Road residence, Prasad sat with his followers, including two former ministers, and asked, “Aare bhai, yeh duranto kya hai? (what is this duranto).
