| Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will soon launch Internet Protocol Television services in cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata.

| Addressing the staff of BSNL, A K Sinha, CMD, said the decision was taken after the successful launch in Pune recently and added that other towns and cities would also be roped in provided BSNL gets suitable partners.

| Meanwhile, BSNL is readying itself to expand the customer base for broadband activity and by June 2007, it expects to release 3.3 million connections of broadband in urban areas and two million-plus connections in the rural areas.

| The company has identified 20,000 village telephone exchanges in this regard. It plans to issue 20 million broadband connections by the year 2010.With the telecom ministry envisaging 500 million phone connections in the year 2010, BSNL was gearing up to achieve the target, he said.

| With regard to telephone connectivity, it has projected at least 30 lakh connections per month. During March 2007, it provided 26 lakh new connections, of which 20 million were mobile connectivity and the remaining landline and connections through WLL services.

| Later, formally inaugurating 'ROTACOM 2007', an exhibition of mobile telecom and IT organised by tge Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Fort, Sinha said the major push in the pipeline was the mobile growth that would come from expeditious introduction of 3G services.

| T V Ramachandran, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India, said there was a scope for improvement and expansion in mobile telephony as only 40 pc of the areawas covered. |
