Microsoft India announces innovation framework
BS Reporter / Bangalore October 08, 2007
Microsoft Corporation India today launched the Microsoft Innovation Framework, aimed at fostering the growth of local software economy. It plans to set up the world’s first Innovation Triangle Park (ITP) in Pune as part of this framework.

The ITP will comprise multiple Microsoft innovation centers focused on three different areas including skills and intellectual capital, industry partnerships and funding, that are vital for software companies looking to create intellectual capital.

Based on a long-term effort involving multiple private and public partnership, Microsoft has already entered into alliances with the Symbiosis International University and College of Engineering, Pune, and Nasscom. Microsoft will contribute its expertise from over 100 Microsoft Innovation Centers, 15 Microsoft Technology Centers and five Microsoft Research Centers across the globe to create a world-class facility.

Microsoft has also announced one Startup Accelerator Programme aimed at providing access, guidance and support to software startup companies through a customised engagement plan. The plan is designed to provide the startups a technology road map, develop their business and marketing skills, provide them access to venture capitalists and enhance their market visibility. Additionally, Microsoft will also provide access to premier support, software licenses early technology access and technology promotion.

Microsoft is also including the Imagine Cup Innovation Accelerator Programme and the Business Model Innovation programme in its Innovation Framework. The company is aiming to harness the talent of the top five Imagine Cup finalists, by providing them a platform for commercialising their innovative ideas. The programme will be implemented in partnership with the Center for Innovation Incubation & Entrepreneurship at IIM-A.

The Business Model Innovation programme announced by the company will include the ‘Vikas’ portal jointly launched by the National Manufacturing Competitive Council and Microsoft earlier this year. Under the programme, Microsoft will recruit partners to engage in solutions catering to the specific markets. The initiative combines on premise software and hosted solutions in a ‘software plus services’ (S+S) model to help SMEs solve vertical problems. Solutions will be delivered entirely via subscription.

Microsoft is organising its ‘India is Innovation’ summit in Bangalore, with an aim of providing a meeting ground for entrepreneurs, incubation heads and venture capitalists on how to take India to the next phase of innovation.

Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft India, said, "We do believe India is at that inflection point and if it has to move up the value chain in the global knowledge economy then the entire ecosystem has to innovate. For us innovating with India is as important as innovating from and for India."
