While the main contenders during this election season include the Congress, BJP, AIUDF and AGP, the main battle is between Congress MLA and current CM Tarun Gogoi and Sarbananda Sonowal, the CM candidate for BJP.    Tarun Gogoi has held the post of Chief Minister in the state since 2001, making him the longest serving CM in Assam. Sonowal on the other hand has been credited with BJP’s victory in seven of the 14 seats in Assam, increasing the BJP’s vote share in Assam to 35% in the 2014 polls, which has made him a popular candidate and a formidable opponent.    Some of the other key candidates in the state include Badruddin Ajmal from AIUDF, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta from AGP and Himanta Biswa Sarma from BJP.    Among all the five states that go to polls in 2016 - namely Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Assam is the only state in which BJP stands out as a strong contender, who might go on to form the government.
