Big Leap Forward

Good news for India’s wealth creators: The country’s middle class is improving and they represent consumption and growing aspirations. So we can look forward to a growing tribe of rich in future.

Indian households earning Rs 2-10 lakh per annum (the middle class) grew almost 2.5 times between 1995-96 and 2001-02. This is projected to rise further, to touch 28.5 million by 2009-10 – when almost 13 per cent population will be in this category.

North accounts for the highest share of people in most income categories apart from the super rich, where the west leads. Mumbai tops the list of rich cities. However, the the highest growth is in cities like Surat and Nagpur.•
