If
most of the top performers in the equity diversified category soared
to glory on the back of mid-cap stocks last year, this year the
strategy proved to be their undoing. Thanks to this, the range of
businesses funds invested in expanded significantly.
The
number of sectors in which funds had more than five per cent exposure
stood at four, down from seven. As far as sectoral preferences go,
funds slashed exposure to the banks and oil companies the most,
followed electricals and engineering. Technology stocks and auto
companies remained the most preferred.
The
stocks that saw the maximum number of schemes investing in them
were all large-cap bluechips. Reliance Industries topped the popularity
chart by virtue of its large weight in the benchmark indices. Grasim,
such as Infosys, SBI, Reliance Industries, ONGC and Bhel.
Grasim,
Tata Motors and Bharati Tele Ventures gained further in popularity.
Raymond, India Cements, Cummins, Aditya Birla Nuvo and Ashok Leyland
were fresh entrants in the top 50 popular stocks.
Fund
increased their exposure to cash marginally as valuations surged
and stocks touched dizzy heights. A slew of new launches meant that
the average cash levels with mutual funds were higher than the previous
year.
