"Police are harassing innocent youths of a particular community and foisting cases against them, who belong to different organisations of the majority community," Dattatreya told reporters.

The BJP leader also alleged that police had arrested four youths from city's Saidabad area, which had witnessed the communal violence and had subjected them to "third-degree methods".

"They were badly beaten by police for forcing them to confess their involvement in the communal violence," he said.

"We wanted to produce the four youths before the media today, who were released on bail recently. However, the Special Investigating Team (SIT) of city police intimidated their family members and made them flee from their houses last night fearing a public outcry," Dattatreya alleged.

Demanding suspension of the police personnel involved in subjecting third-degree methods to the arrested youths, the BJP leader accused the Kiran Kumar Reddy government of "appeasing" the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) party for his "selfish political gains".

Ridiculing a recent order issued by the state government two years after an incident, directing police to arrest five persons including Venkat Reddy, presently city BJP president for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, for allegedly giving provocative speeches during the Sri Ram Navami procession on March 24, 2010.

While the alleged incident had taken place in 2010, the state government had issued an order on May 14 this month following a complaint in this regard. "This shows how the government is trying to appease the minority community," he said.

He demanded immediate withdrawal of the government order and suspension of police officers involved in allegedly harassing the youths from the majority community.
