"The government will not accept the Sumangali scheme," Labour Minister S T Chellapandian told the state assembly.

He was responding to members of left parties who said many young girls recruited by some private cotton companies were being exploited by the management with heavy work load.

Sumangali Scheme was floated by some private cotton companies primarily in Tiruppur, where they would recruit young girls from rural areas on the promise that they would be paid over Rs 25,000 for their wedding, if they work for three years.
