SSL-TTK, a joint venture between UK-based SSL International Plc and Chennai-based Limited, has set up manufacturing and warehouse facilities near Chennai at an investment of Rs 25 crore for 'Scholl' brand of footcare products.
The manufacturing unit, which started production a year back, was formally inaugurated on Monday by Gerald Corbett, chairman, SSL International Plc. The unit is expected to become a manufacturing hub for SSL International's markets in Europe and Asia Pacific.
The plant has been set up over an area of 25,000 sq ft and the warehouse facility over 35,000 sq ft on a 10 acre plot at the Sipcot Industrial Estate at Irrungattukottai, around 45 km from Chennai.
Initially, the unit would have a capacity to produce 30 million units per year. The capacity would be scaled up based on the demand in the domestic and international markets. It will serve 40 per cent of the global requirement of SSL International.
T T Jagannathan, chairman, TTK Group, said in a company release that the plant would initially employ 200 people and manufacture a range of footcare products both for international and Indian markets.
The Scholl footcare range of products would include treatments for common foot ailments such as corns and calluses, a range of insoles, other shoe-comfort products, foot files and accessories as well as specialist skincare creams.
SSL-TTK was set up in 2001 for manufacturing Scholl footcare products and started off with supplying a limited range of products to the domestic market.
It also started serving Asia Pacific markets in 2004. In 2005, it was designated as the manufacturing hub for all of SSL International's products in Europe and Asia Pacific. SSL-TTK's present turnover is about Rs 90 crore.
Garry Watts, chief executive of SSL International said the company had four manufacturing units in India, three of which are dedicated to manufacturing of Durex Condoms for the global market and the latest facility is for manufacturing Dr Scholl's footcare products.
TTK-LIG, the largest manufacturer of condoms in the Asia-Pacific region, is a joint venture between SSL International and Chennai-based TTK Group.
The market for footcare products in India is reported to be in its nascent stage. However, with the increasing awareness on health related issues, the company sees huge market potential and aims to establish the brand in the country. SSL-TTK also operates a licence agreement with Bata India to manufacture and distribute its range of Dr Scholl footwear.
The company's Research and Development unit, which has been set up at Ticel Bio-Park, Chennai, was also inaugurated on Monday by Corbett.
