UK vaccination rates lowest among older Black people

New figures from Britain's statistics agency showed Monday that older people from Black African backgrounds are more than seven times as likely as white Britons to have not received a coronavirus vaccine.
 
More than 30 million people in the UK or about 57 per cent of all adults have received a first vaccine dose. But significant concerns remain about lower vaccination uptakes and hesitancy to take the jab among some ethnic minority groups.
 
The Office for National Statistics said Monday that among people 70 years old or older, the lowest vaccination rates were seen among people identifying as Black African, at 58.8 per cent, and Black Caribbean, at 68.7 per cent.

Mumbai civic body to procure 1.5 lakh Remdesivir injections

Owing to a surge in Covid-19 cases in Mumbai, the city civic body will place the order for procuring 1.5 lakh injections of antiviral drug Remdesivir and other medical equipment to avoid any potential shortage of medicines at hospitals, a senior official said on Monday.
 
He also said that a sizeable number of new cases are reported from high-rise buildings.
 
Mumbai on Sunday reported the highest single-day rise in Covid-19 cases by adding 6,923 new infections, taking the total tally to 398,674.

LIVE: UK PM urges caution, hails Great British summer of sport as lockdown eases

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday called on people to remain cautious as he officially lifted the stay-at-home order to allow the first phase of easing the strict Covid-19 lockdown, allowing for more outdoors activities.
 
Johnson said that he hoped that this first phase of his roadmap to ease restrictions would kickstart a "Great British summer of sport" as people would be able to hold outdoor games and sporting activities. But he stressed the message for people to continue to work from home where possible as it is vital that "we don't overdo it" and risk all the progress that has been made in controlling the spread of the deadly virus.
 
"Today marks the next stage of our roadmap to cautiously ease restrictions in England. Please follow the new rules carefully so that we can gradually get back to normal together, said Johnson.

Indian Army donates 100,000 Covid vaccine doses to Nepal Army

The Indian Army has gifted one lakh doses of India-made anti-Covid-19 vaccines to the Nepal Army as part of the efforts of the militaries of the two neighbours to enhance bilateral cooperation.
 
The vaccines were handed over by the Indian Army officials to their counterparts from the Nepal Army at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday, the Indian Embassy here tweeted.
 
"100,000 doses of #MadeInIndia Covid-19 vaccine gifted by Indian Army to the Nepali Army were received at Tribhuvan Airport," the mission tweeted.
 
India has previously gifted one million doses of Made in India' Covid-19 vaccines to Nepal for the immediate requirement of Nepal's healthcare and front-line workers.
