Benchmark equity indices fall 0.7-0.9%; NSE Volatility Index surges 5.4% to 13.35

The Indian stock markets closed in the red on Monday – the first trading session of 2018. While the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex fell 244 points or 0.72 per cent to close at 33,812.75, the broader Nifty 50 index fell 95 points or 0.9 per cent to close at 10,435.55. In what was a volatile day of trading, the benchmark Sensex lost 250 points in the last 45 minutes of trade, as investors resorted to profit-booking.
