The Airports Authority of India ( AAI) has identified 20 locations in the country for the development of water aerodromes. All the identified 20 sites are freshwater bodies - either a multipurpose dam or a perennial river.  Chilka in Odisha, Asia's largest brackish water lake was identified as one of the first destinations for development of water aerodrome.
