The last Grand Slam of the year, US Open, Sumit Nagal lost his opening match to world number 3 RIger Federer 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6. Regardless of what the scoreline says, Nagal played his heart out in the match. He did not let Federer walk over him. Federer, with his experience and grit, kept him nerves and played to the merit of the game. Nagal kept pushing hard and did not make many unforced errors. However, he was not able to hit aces, something Federer excelled at in this match. Federer will move to the next round now. The joueny for Nagal may be over but he has definately showm Indians some hope for the future

The match was nothing short of a treat for the Indian tennis fans as 22 year old Sumit Nagal from Jhajjar, Haryana won the opening set. Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam titles in his career so far must not have expected Nagal to win the first set. Nagal managed to keep Federer in check in the first set and eventually took the lead. He won the first set 6-4. Federer did look rusty in the game as he missed to convert game points.

The world number 3 Federer made a strong come back in the second set, winning it by 6-1. However, Nagal made Federer fight for each point. It is interesting to note that at the end of the second set, Federer has made 33 unforced errors, while Nagal made only 19.

Extending his lead, Federer won the third set with ease and manage to find more rhythm in the game. Unforced errors were more from Federer, but he improved upon first serve wins and made Nagal run all over. FIghting hard, Nagal won two points but could not repeat the performance of first set.

It is the first time since 1998 that two Indians are part of the singles main draw in a Grand Slam after Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the 1998 Wimbledon.

In the fourt set of the match, Federer showed his class but Nagal too displayed his firm resolve. Though it was not enough for Nagal to push the match into final set, it never seemed that Nagal was out of the place. He was very much in the game and he surprised Federer from time to time with some astonishing returns to powerful serves by Federer. Nagal lost the set 4-6.
