Cii Population Council To Tackle Hrd Issues

Gargi Chakrabarty BSCAL

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) plans to set up a national council for population management (NCPM) to address the issues regarding human resources development. CII had identified population management as a new thrust area.

CII president N Kumar said here on Friday, We are interested in finding ways to improve the quality of our human resource. The council, he clarified, would not be involved in issues regarding population control since that lies strictly outside the purview of the confederation.

The population management council would be a separate entity from the social development council (SDC) which is headed by Jamshed Irani, managing director of Tisco. SDC would look into broader issues regarding social development and labour is one of the many areas under its purview.

CIIs strategy to improve the quality of labour includes setting up of technical training centres in major industrial regions besides evolving ways to achieve better labour cooperation within organisations.

We have a huge reservoir of human resource in the country. However, the quality of our human resources is very low and the returns to labour is much lower compared to other developing countries, a senior CII member pointed out. Our aim would be to increase awareness among workers and also educate them so that the workers have their rightful share in the increased profitability of companies, he emphasised.

The setting up of a population management council comes close on the heels of four other councils which have been newly set up within the confederation. These new councils are the global networking council, social development council, competitive council and national infrastructure council. Infrastructure has been identified as a priority area for CII and the newly set up national infrastructure council would focus on the emerging issues in this sector. The council would be headed by K N Shenoy, former CII president and ABB executive chairman.
