BSI (BSIL), formerly known as The Bhopal Sugar Industries, was incorporated in 1947. In 1985, it was taken over by the Bhiwandilal group and at present is managed by chairman and managing director Yogesh N Wadhwana. In Feb.'93, BSIL came out with a public issue of 20 lac equity shares at a premium of 28 per share, aggregating Rs 7.6 cr, for repayment of lease and loan finance and to meet working capital requirements. The company's main businesses being sugar and solvent extraction, it is also into industrial agriculture, real estate and allied activities. It has a subsidiary, BSI Securities International, which is a member of the National Stock Exchange. The company was in the red before the takeover by the Bhiwandilal group in 1985. BSIL's sugar plant is located at Sehore in Madhya Pradesh. In 1994-95, all the divisions of the company have shown remarkable growth. Upgradation of the solvent extraction plant is underway which will reduce cost and improve profitability. The sugar factory achieved a minimum economic capacity of 2500 tcd and has got a 100% free-sale production quota. The area of sugarcane cultivation has increased from 13,000 acres to 20,000 acres. BSIL has tied up with High Value Horticulture, UK, for soyabean yield improvement.
