Promoted by T G V Naidu and Gangappa Cables, with Genelec and APIDC as associate promoters, Hyderabad Lamps commenced commercial production of tube lamps in Jul.'84 and of glass shells in Jul.'85. HLL had a technical collaboration with GEC, UK, for the manufacture of fluorescent tubes and had tie-up plans with Voltarc Technologies, US, to upgrade technology and improve its product mix. Due to a severe recession in the lamp industry, the frequent civil disturbances and other factors like factory closure due to working capital constraints and labour unrest halted operations for the major part of 1993-94.
