Incorporated as a private limited company and converted into a public limited one in Oct.'85, S M Dyechem manufactures and markets speciality chemicals which are used in textiles, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, leather, man-made fibres, paper, surfactants, disinfectants, etc. Allied Colloids, UK, and Rowan Palm, provide technical assistance to manufacture the polymer-based speciality and textile speciality products. Import-substitute products for filament sizing in the textile industry, amino-silicon-based finishing chemicals and chemical substitutes for kerosene in the printing industry were developed as a result of these collaborations. S M Zschimmer and Schwarz Chemicals was promoted by the company in collaboration with Zschimmer and Schwarz, Germany, to manufacture speciality chemicals based on ethylene oxide. It finds application in pharmaceuticals, leather, man-made fibres, yarn, paints, paper, printing inks, ceramics and consumer product industries like cosmetics and detergents. In 1988, S M Dyechem diversified into the fast-food segment, to manufacture ready-to-eat extruded pasta foods, which are well known by the Peppy and Piknik brands. This division also manufactures animal-shaped cookies which are marketed as Animal Farm. The company set up a plant to manufacture import-substitute products like ethylene oxide (EO), monoethylene glycol (MEG), etc; this was commissioned in Mar.'93. Being the first project to come up in the Kurkumbh industrial area, the unit was accorded the status of pioneer unit by the Government of Maharashtra. The EO and MEG units were categorised into non-performing assets (NPA) during 1993-94, as operations were adversely affected by government policies and reforms. Under a franchise with Fujairah Food Industries, UAE, the company's Protein Crisp will be manufactured overseas. S M Dyechem will supply the complete infrastructure including raw material, technical know-how, management personnel, engineering analysis, production procedures, etc. Fujairah Food will manufacture three brands of S M Dyechem's snacks division -- Peppy Protein Crispies, Piknik Potato Sticks and Square Chips. The company set up an international business division to focus on exports, thereby gaining GoI recognition as a registered Export House. During the year 1999-2000, the company has been registered as a sick company with BIFR and IDBI has been appointed as an operating agency for rehabilitation. The total sales for the year 2000-2001 was Rs.12653.6o lacs when compared to previous year of Rs.13974.74 lacs.
