India to surpass Japan, be second largest Asian economy by 2030: S&P Global

India, the world's fifth largest economy in the world, is likely to overtake Japan to become the world's third-largest economy with a GDP of $ 7.3 trillion by 2030, S&P Global Market Intelligence said in its latest issue of PMI.

After two years of rapid economic growth in 2021 and 2022, the Indian economy has continued to show sustained strong growth during the 2023 calendar year.

India's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow 6.2-6.3 per cent in the fiscal year ending in March 2024, being the fastest-growing major economy this fiscal year. Asia's third-largest economy grew by a stellar 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter.

Delhi govt making all-round preparation to combat increasing pollution: Gopal Rai

Amid the rising concerns over the environment of the national capital with deteriorating air quality, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Tuesday that the government is making an "all-round" preparation to combat pollution.

Action will be taken against those who violate the norms, said Rai, adding that the Delhi government is preparing to come up with a 'Winter action plan'.

"As the Diwali festival is around the corner, the Delhi government is making an all-round preparation to combat pollution. We are looking at every trivial factor that might aid in increasing pollution in Delhi. We are prepared to take strict action on those who violate the norms. The government is also preparing the 'Winter action plan'", Rai said while speaking to ANI here in Delhi.

Over an acre of agricultural land lost in landslides following heavy rain in Kerala's Idukki

Over an acre of agricultural land was lost in Nedumkandam area of this high range district of Kerala late last night in landslides caused by heavy rains, a panchayat official said on Tuesday.

Besides the agricultural land, a portion of road to the area was also damaged due to the landslide, following several hours of continuous heavy rainfall, the official said.

The incident occurred in the 20th ward of the panchayat, the official said, adding that minor landslides occurred in a couple of other places also.

Uttarakhand: Badrinath Dham set to shut for winter on November 18

The portals of Shri Badrinath Dham in Uttarakhand will be closed for winter beginning November 18, authorities said on Tuesday.

Shri Badrinath - Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) President Ajendra Ajay said the decision was announced during a religious ceremony organised on the premises of the temple on the occasion of Vijayadashami today.

He also said that religious leaders, pilgrim priests and rights holders were also present during the function.

Israel increases strikes on Gaza, as two more hostages are freed

Israel escalated its bombardment of targets in the Gaza Strip, the military said on Tuesday, ahead of an expected ground invasion against Hamas militants that the US fears could spark a wider conflict in the region, including attacks on American troops.

Ruling BRS MLC in Telangana K Kavitha will be delivering a keynote lecture at the Oxford University in London on October 30 on the schemes undertaken by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao-led government in the state and about the progress achieved in different fields.

Kavitha has been invited by Oxford University for a lecture as part of development economics, a release from Kavitha's office said here on Tuesday.

"CM KCR led Telangana government's programmes have gained international recognition. Oxford University has acknowledged Telangana's rapid progress in India. This recognition comes as a result of the various initiatives undertaken by the state government," it said.

Toshkhana case: Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif to appear in court today

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to appear in the accountability court and the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday.

He will attend the hearing of the Toshkhana reference as well as the plea for revival of his appeals against his convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia corruption cases, The News International reported on Tuesday.

Pakistan general elections date likely to be announced soon: PM Kakar

Asserting that there will be a level playing field for all political parties in the next general election, Pakistan's caretaker prime minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has expressed hope that the election commission will shortly announce the date of the polls.

Without mentioning the exact date, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) last month announced that general elections would take place in the last week of January 2024.

It seems that the date of the elections will be announced quite soon," Kakar told reporters at a news conference, three days after returning from China, where he had attended Belt and Road Forum (BRF) conference on the 10th anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Air quality in city improves slightly

Delhi's air quality improved marginally on Tuesday morning but was still in the poor category, according to monitoring agencies.

The city's average air quality index (AQI) stood at 220 at 12 noon, improving from 263 at 4 pm on Monday.

Delhi's air quality had turned "very poor" on Sunday for the first time since May, mainly due to a drop in temperature and wind speed, which allowed pollutants to accumulate.

Madrasa teacher in Gujarat held for sodomising 10 minor students

A 25-year-old teacher of a madrasa in Gujarat's Junagadh district has been arrested for allegedly sodomising at least 10 of his minor students, police said.

Apart from the maulana (teacher), the police have also arrested a 55-year-old trustee of the madrasa for allegedly not taking any action on complaints of the students against the teacher, Junagadh district police said in a statement on Monday.

While the teacher was nabbed from his hideout in Surat, the madrasa trustee, who had also managed to escape, was caught from a place in Junagadh on Sunday, said the statement.

Home guard dies after pickup van hits Delhi Police car

A 41-year-old home guard was killed when a pickup van rammed into a Delhi Police vehicle in Dwarka's Baba Haridas Nagar, police said on Tuesday.

On the intervening night of October 22 and 23, assistant sub-inspector Mahesh Kumar and Home Guard Dharampal were on patrolling duty in the area in a PCR van, they said.

On the Najafgarh-Bahadurgarh Road, a pickup van hit their vehicle leaving both of them injured, they said.

Five of family killed as car falls off bridge in Jharkhand

Five members of a family were killed in Jharkhand's Deoghar district after their car fell off a bridge on Tuesday morning, police said.

The accident occurred when their vehicle fell from the bridge into the Siktia barrage, Deoghar Superintendent of Police Ajit Peter Dungdung said.

"Five members of a family were killed when their car fell off the bridge into the barrage while the driver of the SUV has been injured," the SP told PTI.

Seven men, including Assam workers killed as SUV rams into bus in TN

Seven men, including five workers belonging to Assam, were killed when the SUV in which they were travelling collided head on with a state government bus near Chengam in the district, police said on Tuesday.

The accident occurred when the SUV carrying about 11 people, mostly workers, was proceeding to Krishnagiri. It rammed into the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus coming here from Bengaluru on the Tindivanam-Krishnagiri national highway on Monday night, police said.

Seven workers, among the 11 travelling in the SUV, were killed on the spot, while the injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital, Tiruvannamalai.
