CM Mamata sees 'conspiracy' behind Bengal floods, blames Centre

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Centre of failing to carry out dredging at the DVC dams, which released water resulting in floods in several districts of the state. Banerjee held the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) accountable for the "man-made" floods and suggested there was a conspiracy behind the situation in the state. DVC dams are located at Maithon and Panchet, both along the Jharkhand-Bengal border.

HC seeks stand of Puja Khedkar on perjury claim by UPSC in anticipatory bail case

The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the stand of Puja Khedkar on the UPSC's allegation that the former IAS probationer committed perjury by making a false statement in relation to her anticipatory bail plea. Justice Subramaniam Prasad asked Khedkar to file her reply to the Commission's application, which is filed in the proceedings on her pre-arrest bail plea. "I will issue notice. File your reply," Justice Prasad told Khedkar's counsel, and listed the matter for hearing on September 26.

The Congress on Thursday slammed as "intemperate" and "senseless" BJP president JP Nadda's reply to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging "threats" aimed at Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi, saying there was once a PM who, for 17 years, replied to each and every official and personal letter sent to him.

Trinamool Congress' Jawhar Sircar quits Rajya Sabha

Jawhar Sircar, who had questioned the TMC government in West Bengal over steps taken after the Kolkata rape-murder incident, on Thursday resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership. According to official sources, Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar has accepted his resignation as Rajya Sabha member with immediate effect. Sircar had recently written to his party head and state chief minister Mamata Banerjee describing the steps taken by her government in handling the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar hospital "too little and quite late".

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday felicitated sanitation workers for their dedication towards cleanliness and laid the foundation stone for the six-lane Ujjain-Indore road in Madhya Pradesh. Four women were among the five safai mitras (sanitation workers) honoured by the president here on the occasion. Murmu also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a six-lane Ujjain-Indore road, to be built at a cost of Rs 1,692 crore.

Tharoor to head standing committee on external affairs, Digvijaya to chair panel on education

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor will head the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs and veteran leader Digvijaya Singh will head the panel on education, party sources said on Thursday. Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi will lead the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture and Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka will head the panel on rural development. Channi, who is a Dalit, and Ulaka, who hails from a tribal community, were chosen by the party with social justice being the centrepiece of all recent appointments.
