Harvinder Kalyan unanimously elected Haryana Assembly Speaker
BJP lawmaker Harvinder Kalyan was unanimously elected speaker of the Haryana Assembly here on Friday. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini moved a resolution in the House proposing Kalyan's name while BJP MLA Ranbir Gangwa seconded the proposal.
Kalyan is a three-time MLA from Gharaunda in Karnal district. Prior to Kalyan's election as speaker, Protem Speaker and senior Congress leader Raghuvir Singh Kadian administered oath to the newly elected MLAs of the 90-member House.

Only 5 extradition requests for terrorists resolved by Canada, rest in limbo: Indian envoy
Of the 26 requests sent to Canada for extraditing Khalistani terrorists, Ottawa has resolved only five and the rest remain in limbo, India's top envoy to that country has said, calling it the result of "inaction". The five men are in the process of being extradited, High Commissioner Sanjay Verma told PTI in an interview this week. He said he is not at liberty to disclose the name or give details. India recalled him and five other Indian diplomats after they were named "person of interest" in a Canadian investigation into the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist who was a Canadian citizen.

Four killed, 3 injured in SUV-oil tanker collision in Ujjain
Four persons were killed and three others injured in a collision between a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and an oil tanker in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, police said. The victims were returning to Indore from Ajmer in adjoining Rajasthan after a pilgrimage when their SUV met with the accident, Khachrod police station officer Dhansingh Nalvaya said.

Steelmaker JSW Steel on Friday reported a steep fall of 85.43 per cent in its consolidated net profit at Rs 404 crore in the July-September quarter of the current fiscal, affected by lower income. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,773 crore in the second quarter of the last financial year.

An elderly woman died at a cyclone shelter in Odisha's Kendrapara district, officials said on Friday. The 82-year-old woman identified as Hemalata Nayak of Bankual village died on Thursday night of suspected cardiac arrest at a cyclone shelter set up at Kalyan Mandap Dangamal under Dangamal gram panchayat under Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district, they said. The woman was shifted to the cyclone shelter earlier on Thursday.

Centre doubles loan limit under Mudra Yojana to Rs 20 lakh
The government has doubled the loan limit under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) to Rs 20 lakh to promote entrepreneurship in the country. This increase aspires to further the overall objective of the Mudra Scheme which is funding the unfunded, the finance ministry said in a statement on Friday.
A notification in this regard was issued on Thursday. As announced by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23, 2024, in the Union Budget 2024-25, the limit under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has been enhanced from the current Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.

Inequality, inflation 'structurally corrosive' for long-term growth, says Congress
The Congress today stated that inequality, wage stagnation and inflation were "structurally corrosive" to India's long-term growth prospects and urged the government to address concerns over the growing financialisation of the Indian economy. Ramesh shared an article by a noted public finance economist and said it revealed issues that were a further cause for concern. Citing the article, Ramesh said the share of passive income -- income from rent, dividends, capital gains, etc -- in the total reported income had increased from 16 per cent in 2016-17 to 24 per cent in 2023-2024.

Driver for UN agency killed by Israeli forces
A driver for the United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees in Gaza was killed when a UN-marked vehicle was hit by Israeli forces, the United Nations said Thursday. UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that the Israeli fire also killed the driver's brother and left three passersby with minor injuries.
Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon claimed the UNRWA driver was a Hamas commander who participated in the October 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel.
