    The government on Dec 24 announced the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for former prime minister (left) Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

    Late freedom fighter-educationist & lawyer Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya has been named for India's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna. The Allahabad-born visionary was the president of the Indian National Congress for two terms and was also among the first leaders of the right-wing Hindu Mahasabha. A Bharat Ratna for Malviya, fondly referred to as ‘Mahamana’, was one of the promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

    In 2013 amidst much speculation the govt announced it would confer the Bharat Ratna upon cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. He remains the first and only sportsperson to be given this honour.

    In 2013 the govt announced it would confer noted Indian chemist C N Rao with the Bharat Ratna. Rao's has worked mainly in solid-state and structural chemistry and has honorary doctorates from 60 universities from around the world. He has authored around 1,500 research papers and 45 scientific books. He was the third scientist after CV Raman and AP J Abdul Kalam to receive the award
