Authorities in Tripura continue to fence border despite resistance by locals

Sonamura, Sep 14 (ANI): District administration in Tripura continued to fence the area along Bangladesh border despite resistance from residents of the region. Work on ongoing barbed wire fencing between Kulubari and N C Nagar area of Sonamura district continued amid protests from villagers.

From the past few years the villagers have been demanding compensation for the loss of land due to the fencing, including zero line fencing, inside the Indian territory. The state administration held several rounds of talks with the villagers.

Ahmed said the problems can only be solved with the intervention of the central government since the matter doesn't fall under their jurisdiction. The state government wants to complete the fencing, citing national security.

Of the 80-kilometre India-Bangladesh border, around 10 kilometre patch along the border remains unfenced. The stretch is allegedly used for infiltration and smuggling.
